How the Process Works

From notarization to delivery — one office in Austin, every destination.

1

Prepare & Notarize

We prepare your document and coordinate Texas notarization or certified copies, and confirm which authority your country requires.

2

Submit to the Secretary of State

We file the Universal Apostille request (Form 2102) with the Authentications Unit in Austin, naming your destination country.

3

Legalize When Needed

For non-Hague countries we add U.S. Department of State authentication and embassy or consulate legalization.

4

Translate & Deliver

We arrange certified or sworn translation where required and deliver the finished documents to you — or directly to your barrister, solicitor, advocate, or notario abroad, ready to file.

Texas Apostilles — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about authenticating Texas documents for use abroad.

What is an apostille, and who issues it in Texas?
An apostille is an internationally recognized certificate that authenticates a public document for use abroad. In Texas, apostilles are issued by one office — the Secretary of State's Authentications Unit in Austin. Since October 2023 Texas issues a single "Universal Apostille" that works for every destination country, whether or not that country belongs to the Hague Apostille Convention.
Does the county where my document was notarized matter?
No. Texas does not require county-clerk pre-certification of a notary. A document notarized by any Texas notary — in any of the 254 counties — goes directly to the Secretary of State. The process is identical statewide, which is why we can handle apostilles for clients anywhere in Texas.
How long does a Texas apostille take, and what does it cost?
The state fee is $15 per document. Mailed requests can take up to 25 business days (and sometimes longer). In-person and appointment service in Austin is same-day for up to 10 documents, and a bulk drop-box option turns around larger batches in 24–48 hours. We manage submission and return delivery so you don't have to travel to Austin.
Can Texas apostille an FBI background check or naturalization certificate?
No. Those are federal documents. The Texas Secretary of State can only authenticate Texas documents. Federal records — FBI background checks, USCIS naturalization certificates, IRS letters — must be authenticated by the U.S. Department of State in Washington. We coordinate the correct path so your documents are not rejected.
My destination country is not in the Hague Convention. Can you still help?
Yes. For non-member countries (for example Nigeria, the UAE, Qatar, or — until September 11, 2026 — Vietnam), the document needs the Texas Universal Apostille, then authentication by the U.S. Department of State, then legalization by that country's embassy or consulate. We manage the full chain end to end.
Do you work with my barrister, solicitor, or notary abroad?
Yes — international coordination is a core part of the service. We work directly with the professional handling your matter overseas — a barrister or solicitor in Nigeria, the UK, or other Commonwealth countries, an advocate in India or Pakistan, a notario público in Mexico or Latin America — so the document is drafted with the exact wording their registry, court, or bank requires before we apostille it, and delivered to them ready to use.
